The daughter of a count plays with a servant's affections, but a simple flirtation turns into a dangerous
game of cat and mouse. August Strindberg's play on power is a groundbreaking battle of the sexes.
In 1925, Lord Cromer banned performances of Miss Julie from the England stage, claiming it contained a “sordid and disgusting atmosphere, which makes the immorality of the play galling and crude. There is the very questionable theme in these days of the relationship between masters and servants, which this play tends to undermine.”
